This document will serve as official notice of nominations and elections for UFCW Canada Local 12R24. This notice has been mailed to the latest address on file for you with UFCW Canada Local 12R24. As per your local By-laws Derek Johnstone, Special Assistant to the National President, will be the Election Chairperson. A number of Election Judges have also been appointed and , together will form the Election Committee. The current officers of UFCW  Canada Local 12R24 shall have no authority in the matters of the nominations and elections.

The three-year term of the present Executive Board expires on December 31, 2017. Under the Constitution and Bylaws of the United Food and Commercial Workers Canada (UFCW Canada) and UFCW Local 12R24, nominations and elections will be held according to the process explained in this notice.

Nominations for President, Secretary-Treasurer and Recorder

Nominations for the President, Secretary-Treasurer and Recorder positions will be held at the nomination meetings listed in this notice. All eligible members will be able to stand for election of this position. Nominations for the three positions must be conducted at the Nomination Meeting. In accordance with the UFCW Constitution and Local Union By-laws, write-in nominations will not be accepted.

  • To be eligible, a candidate must be an  active  member  in  the  Local  Union,  who has  been  an  active  member  in  the  Local  Union,  or  who had been a member of another organization merged with  the  Local  Union,  for  a  continuous  aggregate  of  at  least 12  months  immediately  preceding  the  month  in  which   nominations  are  held,  or  an  active  member  in  the  Local   Union who has been an active member in the International Union  continuously  for  at  least  24  months  immediately preceding the month in which nominations are held, shall be eligible to hold any Local Union office, provided that said member maintains continuous active membership in the Local Union.

  • Eligible members not attending the Nomination Meeting may be nominated for one of the three positions by any member in good standing present at the meeting, or by phone if the nominating member is more than one and one half (1½) hours travel distance from the meeting.  The phone call must be made during the nomination times listed in this notice. The person phoning in a nomination will be called back to verify that they are a member in good standing.  

  • Any eligible member who is nominated for a position must indicate their intention to stand for election in writing. Members properly nominated to positions of President, Secretary-Treasurer and Recorder shall not appear on the Election Ballot unless the Chairperson of the Election received written acceptance thereof, within seven (7) days following the final nomination meeting.

  • For an election for the offices of Local Union President and/or Secretary-Treasurer a majority of votes cast shall be required for election. If no nominee for Local Union President or Secretary-Treasurer receives a majority of votes cast, a runoff election between the two nominees with the higher number of votes shall be conducted.

  • If more than one (1) person is nominated for Recorder, the nominee receiving the most votes in the election shall be considered elected.

  • When nominations have been completed and there are unopposed candidates, such unopposed candidates shall be deemed elected by acclamation.

Executive Board Nomination Procedure for Fourteen (14) Vice-President Positions:

There shall be  (2) Vice-Presidents from each of the Local Union’s seven (7) Regions, one (1) from Retail, and one (1) from Logistics.

Nominations for the fourteen (14) Vice-Presidents positions will be held at the nomination meetings listed in this notice. All eligible members must work in the region, to be able to stand for election of this position. Nominations for these fourteen positions must be conducted at the Nomination Meeting. In accordance with the UFCW Constitution and Local Union By-laws, write-in nominations will not be accepted.

Region 1 Deep North: includes Thunder Bay, Kenora east to Marathon.
Region 2 Near North:

Sault Ste. Marie, Wawa, Hearst, Kapuskasing, as far East as Kirkland Lake/New Liskeard, North Bay to Parry Sound, Sudbury, and Timmins areas.

Region 3 Eastern Region: Peterborough, North to Deep River and East through Ottawa.
Region 4 Toronto East: Kingston, Belleville, Whitby, Oshawa.
Region 5 Toronto West:

Brampton/Mississauga, North to Barrie, Newmarket, through Wasaga Beach, to Owen Sound, and Hanover.

Region 6 Golden Horseshoe:

Niagara Falls, St. Catharines, Welland, Ft. Erie, Hamilton, Burlington, Kitchener, Guelph, and Brantford.

Region 7 South West: London, Windsor, Sarnia, Chatham, Stratford, and Woodstock.
